Many of us autistic individuals want to work against misconceptions/ stereotypes about autism. One of these misconceptions is that autistic people live in a bubble, in the meaning of not having contact with the majority world. This idea stems from a very narrow view of autism equals being non verbal and the view of “if you cannot express yourself verbally, you are not connected to the world around you”. Both these perspectives are just wrong.
So, with this understanding, why is my choice to use this terminology in this context, as part of what I want to share with others? Don´t I just feed the idea of the “autistic bubble”?
The “bubble idea” that I refer to is another one than what the stereotype above involves. To me, the creation of “a bubble”, is a tool that I (and many other autistic individuals) find necessary as a protection from a very overwhelming world. It involves the creation of safe spaces, both within us and in the external world; to be ourselves, breath, relax, grow, recharge, live, connect with each other, unmasking etc.
Where I am in life now, it is a gift to myself to create the most amazing autistic bubble that I possibly can for myself.
I need and I love my bubble.
